Yes, when it comes to your internet marketing, there are website content writing tips honed from the masters of direct response copywriting. And the nice thing about these insider secrets is they also apply to most of your other sales writing, too.

So, here are 5 tips that you can use to spruce up your content writing today.

1. Know your audience.
With all of the content that I write every day, my mindset has switched from a normal concern with myself to an obsession with the person I’m communicating with. This is a crucial change in perspective for you if you’re writing content for your website. It’s not natural for most of us to obsess about others, but you’ll see a big difference in your copy when you do. It’s almost miraculous in how engaging and relevant it will be.

2. Don’t over use words.
I’m astounded that, without realizing it, I invariably use the same word over and over again in a paragraph or section of text. I can’t tell I’m doing it until I proof my copy. It’s always a different word and it invariably creeps in after I use it in the first sentence of a paragraph. (See, another “invariably”? Darn!) You can easily catch this if you proof your copy by reading it aloud.

3. Eliminate your first paragraph.
Invariably (there I go again!) writers start out warming up the reader by setting the stage or maybe creating a little suspense at the beginning of a Web page. Problem is, this doesn’t usually work. My advice is to go ahead and write this warm-up paragraph. Then when you’re finished with the page, try eliminating it. See how powerful the text is when you get to the point faster.

4. Play it loose with grammar.
If you have a choice between good grammar in a correct sentence that’s hard to understand and an ungrammatical but easy to understand sentence, pick the latter. This is especially true of sentence fragments. Okay?

5. Write to an individual.
When writing copy for your website, remember that you’re writing to one visitor. You want an intimate conversation with just the one person reading your text. Don’t use phrases like, “some of you….” Write as if you’re one person talking to another person.

So there you go, some website content writing tips to keep your visitors engaged and on your site. There’s lots more, so look for them in upcoming posts.
