What’s This New SEO Mumbo Jumbo All About?

I’m proposing some Web writing for On-Page SEO for a prospect out west. After receiving the proposal, he emailed me a question about the new SEO.

Here it is:

“Not that I know anything about SEO but I did listen to the mumbo jumbo different folks overwhelmed me with. I barely understand that Google changed from key words in the text to social media (how often your name appears in print on the different platforms) to raise or lower your webpage/advertisement advancement? Any truth to that?”

My response:

“Google didn't change from keywords to social media, it changed from keywords only to quality content with keywords and incoming links.

“That means that the new On Page SEO adds up to well written, informative pages each about one topic only...the keyword. To help Google determine what the page topic is, keywords about that topic are placed in the Title Tag, Meta Description, headline, and text. The trick is to use the keyword sparingly but in the right places and to use its synonyms in the text.

“That's why I'm proposing just minor changes to your current text. It looks pretty good to me, though I may suggest more changes as I get into it. That will be part of my job with the On Page SEO I proposed.

Social media is a part of the Off Page SEO I mentioned in my proposal. Links to the site from credible sources help your search engine rankings. You get these links by posting frequently to your blog, offering links to your blog on social media, offering links to other sites on social media to maintain your credibility, and writing articles for other websites that would link to your site.

“You also get links to your site by placing your business in various online directories, especially Google My Business. It looks like you are in some directories, but not sure if they're quality listings.

“In your business, there's loads of potential for articles and posts. I help businesses plan their blog posts, even write them ahead of time. For example, I recently wrote 26 posts at once for an insurance agency. This is half a year’s worth that we are posting each week. We can do the same for you. We post to Facebook, LinkedIn, Google +, and Twitter.

“Upshot: First, get your website SEO as good as you can get it, then work on the Off Page SEO with incoming links. Make sense?”

There you have it, an inexpensive way for you to start your business’s or non-profit’s new SEO Journey.

Until next time,
Nick

PS. Oh, yeah, I added this to the email to my prospect, “PS. Google ‘quality web writing’ (no quotes) and NKB Marketing should appear below the paid listings at the top. Let me know if it does.”
